Discussion

This is a space for discussion and sharing... Here's a little poem to start with.

Stars in the Night Avril McDonald
Stars in the night gather near Fairies fly and meet us here.
As we close our eyes and count to ten, (shhh just whisper 1,2,3...) Breathe in and out and in again.
Wiggle your toes ... now make a smile. Be very still and think a while ...
Who do you love and who loves you? What’s your favourite thing to do?
Where’s the best place you’ve ever been? What’s the most magical thing you’ve seen?
Stir all these things around in your cup And like a hot chocolate Drink them all up

  1. Thanks for today. I particularly enjoyed Brene Brown's clip about empathy.

    I would love to explore and discuss ways to support our anxious learners in multi teacher classrooms.

    Obviously there is no magic classroom set up that caters to all kids perfectly, but we can certainly be vigilant and aware when accomodating individuals within these spaces and teams.

    Things I have tried to support specific children:
    * a teepee space
    * individual work station
    * 'safe' spaces (a particular bean bag or comfy couch)
    * involving family more in the classroom program
    * real discussion and education for other students about difference
    (I particularly love this clip, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fy7gUIp8Ms&t=195s)

    Questions I have.
    * have any of you had children who mimic the behaviours of ASD children?
    * how have you dealt with this?
    *

    2. Thanks for the reply. These clips are great!
      When I say 'mimic', I mean specifically that I have a student who takes on some of the mannerisms, and behaviours of an ASD student. Not in a mocking/teasing nor disrespectful way, but seemingly subconsciously.
      Have you experienced this?

    3. Yes, I have experienced something like that, although I'm not sure if it was subconscious or not. I just pointed the behaviour out to the student and he stopped. Let's make sure we talk about this at the next seminar!

    4. The 'mimicking' is happening between two ASD students.

  2. i.e. the stimming that one student has commonly exhibited is now becoming a regular behaviour in another student. It is not a negative nor positive thing....just interesting.
